  • Do colleges still look at extracurricular activities?

    April 23rd, 2010 by RLove.us Admin

I snowboard but thats about it on my extra curricular activities list. I volunteer at a local hospital too so will i look bad on my college admissions for not having alot of extra curriculars

Yep, especially if you are applying to smaller schools.

    • Baccheus

You might. Grades and test scores are still the most important. But if you don’t have great grades, the schools will assume you care more about snowboarding than your future and decide the slot would be better used by admitting some body else. Depending on how much time you volunteer what you do, the hospital might look very good on your application

Yes, they do look at extracurricular activities, but they’d rather see that an applicant is seriously involved in, say, two such activities than a whole list of superficial involvements.

Extracurriculars definitely play a factor in getting into colleges. Some will put a greater deal of weight on them than others. If you have good enough grades, a few extracurriculars and decent SAT or ACT scores you should be fine.

If there is a school you really want to get into but are nervous you won’t make the cut, a lot of times you can apply for the summer semester and it will be easier to be accepted.

Your snowboarding and volunteer hours will look good. You could also include an essay (some schools require it) about snowboarding, your intended major, why you choose this school, etc. This will be a plus to the people looking over you application.

      Good luck!

Well when I graduated two years ago they did. I took classes like Spanish, and I was involved in different cultural clubs. I had to do 200 hours of community service hours and I volunteered at a hospital for 6 months as well. I also ran track and cross country. All that still was not enough to get me in to the college that I wanted. Although I did get accepted to other colleges. So depending on what you are going in to school for, you may be able to get in on just your community service at the hospital. But I’ll tell you this. Don’t worry too much because if you don’t get accepted into a four year right away, you can always go to a community college to take your general ed, then transfer. That’s what I did, and that saved me almost $10,000. 00 If I wouldn’t have gone to a community college my tuition would be a lot bigger right now. So don’t fret too much ok. Good luck!

Depends on the college you want to go to. The more prestigious a college means more weight on extracurriculars. First concentrate on academics because they are most important, then worry about extracurriculars. To give you a gauge on the importance of extracurriculars, I had a 3. 5 GPA at the time I applied to University of Delaware and no extracurriculars. I got rejected.

Yes, they still look at these activities. Don’t worry if you don’t have a long list. . they would rather see you committed over time to activities that you are interested in. . there is a good article here about constructing your extracurricular resume. .
