I love Idealist.org for its plentiful international opportunities and am seriously considering applying to do some volunteer work abroad next year. For example, working with orphan children in Peru is one volunteer listing I’m interested in.

Has anyone had a personal experience using Idealist.org for this purpose?

Specifically, what to look for when choosing a listing? What additional questions to ask? How to make sure you get this exact experience you’re signing up for?

I need a good charity where a 8th grader can volunteer at elementary schools and read to the kids.
I need a good orginazation for 8th grade students in Lee’s Summit to volunteer. I’m looking for an orginazation where 8th grade kids can read books to elementary school students.

preferably not affiliated with any religion, and pays for most/all living expenses while volunteering.

I’m interested in finding an organization similar to Doctors Without Borders, where I can go volunteer in a different country during my summer off from college.
