RSVP TaleTellers Celebration of Service Awards

    February 8th, 2010

The 2009 Planned Acts of Kindness Award is being presented to a group of volunteers whose extraordinary efforts and volunteer outreach have changed the lives of those in need. The dedicated volunteers of RSVP taletellers read two books weekly to pre-k and kindergarten children in 150 classrooms in 50 Duval County Public Schools. The majority of the schools are attended by children from low income families. More than 3000 children, most likely to be at risk, are impacted by taletellers each week. taletellers do more than just read to children; they bring a new experience to children whose lives are constricted by poverty, crime and lack of positive role models. The RSVP volunteers of taletellers also participate in early childhood literacy activities throughout the community. The help distribute United Way Life: Act 2s intergenerational books, read on guest reader days at schools and bookstores, participate in the Mayors RALLY reading activities and more. When grants or donations are available, taleteller volunteers may leave books for the classroom library or for children to take home. The taletellers range in age from 55 to 98 years young.
